What did you learning about in this class, had never known about before, and found especially interesting?
Something that I learned about in this Summer U.S. history class that I didn't know before is the watergate scandal. It was very interesting to see the events unfold. I had never heard of it beforehand so it really intrigued me.
ReplyDeleteI found it especially interesting that the US Supreme court was able to give itself an extremely powerful power, judicial review, from a case. I didn't know that judicial review came from a court decision, as I previously thought that it was a power given to the Supreme court from the Constitution. This surprised me as I thought that all the powers of the Legislative, Judicial and Executive Branch were concrete in the constitution or in the amendments. I learned that powers of the government can come from court precedents as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat I have learned in this class is how the Chinese interfered with the Korean war. I didn't know that the US made a bad decision not to blow up the bridges on the Yalu River. Which allowed the Chinese to attack from the north. This is very interesting because if the US blow up the bridges, China couldn't have helped and would have changed history.
ReplyDeletePrior to this class, I didn't know about the Watergate scandal. I found it especially interesting that one of our presidents lied about having any knowledge of the incident, even though there was evidence (tape recordings, etc.) proving otherwise. It was really interesting learning about how the incident took place.
ReplyDeleteSomething interesting that I learned about was President Nixon and the Watergate scandal. It was very intriguing to discover why former CIA agents were breaking into the Watergate building and why Nixon tried to pay them off.
ReplyDeleteLearning about the Watergate Scandal and the listening tapes was probably the most interesting lesson I learned in this class. It felt more like a story, rather than a lesson, so I never lost interest. I really enjoyed the fact that it revolved around the CIA and I thought the listening tapes were an unexpected plot twist that made me more intrigued.

ReplyDeleteSomething that I learned was that the Trail of Tears took place around 1838. The Trail of Tears was when the U.S. government had removed the Choctaws, Creeks, and Chickasaws from their tribal lands in the Southeast. The Cherokees were refusing to emigrate, so the new president Martin van Buren, ordered the general at the time, General Winfield Scott, to round them up at force them to leave. In the summer, soldiers arrested around 15,000 Cherokees and told them to march. When going west, there was horrible living conditions, limited water, poor food and diseases and was an estimated death of 3,000 Cherokees. Not wanting to put the rest of the Cherokees that hadn't left yet through this, Chief Ross organized and lead the removal himself. Cherokees were formed into groups of about 1,000 people and left every few days. They left in october and took about 4 months. Since it was around winter time many had children and elders had died. Finally the last group of Cherokees had reached their new homeland around March of 1839.

ReplyDeleteThere have been many things I have learned so far in summer school but the most interesting thing I have learned about have been the court cases. I did not know that specific cases could be so important and decide the future laws in our country. The Marbury vs Madison case was especially interesting because it established the power of judicial review and has benefited the country in many ways. Also, the Roe vs Wade case was important because it granted women the right to an abortion, which has shaped the world today.
ReplyDeleteSomething that I learned was the Watergate Scandal. CIA agents had broken into the Democratic National Committee offices in Washington to steal tapes that the White House employees had ordered. President Nixon, on edge of impeachment, disclosed the White Houses involvement and its coverup, forcing him to resign in 1974.
ReplyDeleteThis summer, I learned many things that I did not already know, like the basis of industrialization in America, and the curious story on Watergate. Not only did I learn about the standard material that is offered, I learned life long lessons on how to be productive in society.
ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing that I learn in the class was the cold war between U.S and USSR. Both of them have very strong power after WWII. They extreme mistrust of one another. And they almost start Nuclear warfare. It's interesting to figure out how they treated each other, and who stopped them when they almost start a Nuclear warfare.
ReplyDeleteI learnt the three diplomacies US used to defeat Soviet Union during cold war period, which are dollar diplomacy, big stick diplomacy and moral diplomacy. Before, I only learned that the U.S. dollar diplomacy was used by the U.S. government to stop or end the war on Latin American land. However, I did not know that the U.S. dollar diplomatic strategy was also used in the battlefield of the Cold War and achieved substantial Success. In addition, I’ve also learned about the big stick diplomacy and moral diplomacy strategies for the first time.
ReplyDeleteI learned about the Watergate scandal in this class, something that I did not hear about before. In China, all we knew about Nixon was that he came to China and helped open up relations between the two countries, but Nixon did something so corrupt in America, something I thought would not happen! It made sense that Nixon was forced to resign in 1974, but the fact that he could be so corrupt was extremely surprising. People say that the United States is such a good country, but this act of corruption seems crazy for a 'good country.'
