  1. US Methods of Containment During the Cold War
The Cold War was a forty year long conflict between the USSR and the USA from the time between 1945 to 1991, which was caused by a combination of two contrasting ideals: Communism and Democracy; the stockpiling of nuclear weapons on both sides; the rapid development of technology and the space race; and the fear of the spread of each ideal around the world. It was considered a cold war due to the lack of direct combat between the USSR and the USA, as most of the conflict resided in US efforts to contain the spread of Communism. The Cold War consisted of repeated US attempts to contain the spread of Communism at whatever means necessary, which led to the suffering and deaths of millions in other nations.
The U.S. sought to contain Soviet expansion during the Cold War in many different ways: by using dollar diplomacy, big stick diplomacy, and moral diplomacy
In order to contain the spread of Communism around the globe during the Cold War, the US employed the use of dollar diplomacy to limit the power of the USSR. Dollar diplomacy is the use of a country's financial power to extend its international influence. This was done right after WWII in several forms, such as the Marshall Plan enacted by the US. The Marshall plan gave funds, resources and assets to help rebuild European nations that bordered the Soviet Controlled countries. The plan succeeded in containing the spread of Communism. Because dollar diplomacy is essentially using money to buy friends, the US’s use of money to contain Communism by giving money to European countries who were near Soviet Controlled land was a form of dollar diplomacy used to contain Communism.
In order to contain the spread of Communism around the globe during the Cold War, the US employed the use of big stick diplomacy to limit the power and control of the USSR. Big Stick Diplomacy is the use negotiations backed by the threat of force. Examples of the US’s use of Big Stick diplomacy during the Cold War includes the stockpiling of nuclear weapons and the development of hydrogen bombs. Since nuclear and hydrogen bonds are devastating weapons of mass destruction, they are a extreme weapon of force. Since the US stockpiled its nuclear weapons, it was able to use the threat of the destruction of a nation and its people to negotiate with other countries in international matters. Since the US used weapons of mass destruction as a threat to coerce other nations, in particular the USSR during the Cold war, the US used Big Stick Diplomacy during the cold war to contain Communism.
In order to contain the spread of Communism around the globe during the Cold War, the US employed the use of moral diplomacy to limit the power and control of the USSR. Moral diplomacy is the system in which support is given only to countries whose moral beliefs are analogous to that of the nation. The US used moral diplomacy in the form of the threat of a world of nuclear fall out. The collapse of the Soviet Union was caused in part due to the moral fact that if all of the nuclear weapons were launched, the world would be obliterated of all life on it. This allowed for the US to negate the threat of nuclear war with the USSR with moral diplomacy.
